Hitting Rewind on 2013 I know, long time no see. My last entry was almost exactly four months agowhich is terrible. Senior fall ended up being a little more overwhelming than I thought it was going to be a confusing whirlwind of psets, tests, med school interviews, extracurriculars, and more. By the time finals week rolled around, I was desperate to be done. I stumbled through 1 final presentation, 2 final projects, and 2 final exams then flew home to Houston. For the next two weeks, all I did was read at Barnes and Noble (I finally read the last book in the Eragon series! YeahI havent really matured in college . ), eat my moms food, and sleep like 10 hours a night. It was like hitting a huge, much-needed reset button on my life. At the beginning of January, I flew back to Boston for a month-long externship at a healthcare consulting firm about an hour outside Boston. The  externship program is a pretty cool opportunity for MIT students to take advantage of during IAP. Current students can apply to various externship postings and work for a month with an MIT alumnus at a company that matches their interests. While I do plan on going directly to medical school next year, I have always wondered what consulting was all about. My IAP healthcare consulting externship ended up being the perfect way for me to satisfy that curiosity and it didnt hurt that the MIT alumnus I got matched up with was a good friend of mine and always awesome and encouraging. Kinda like this Because the commute was about an hour each way, I woke up early and slept early all through IAP. And somehow IAP flew by and the semester had begun. Soooo.my semester.is..AWESOME. For How I Met Your Mother fans, my semester is so awesome that the following would be appropriate The reason its so awesome is because I am taking wait for it ONE CLASS TOTAL!! Woooooo! Granted, its a lab class, so my Tuesdays and Thursdays are pretty much packed with lab time. But my Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are free which means EVERY weekend is at the very least a 4-day weekend! I love the extra time so far Ive mostly used it to plan Camp Kesem events and teach Intro Psych recitations, but after the next week or so, a lot of CK stuff will be done and Ill get to do things at MIT/in Boston that Ive wanted to do forever like visit the Museum of Fine Arts, learn how to make data visualizations like this one, get back to dancing a lot, and more. Ive already started on the dance thing. Im back on Chamak this semester MITs Indian fusion dance team. We have a big performance coming up the first weekend of March so Ive been trying to catch up to the rest of team members, who already know most of the choreo. In addition to Chamak, Im also co-choreographing the senior class dance for MITs annual Culture Show or C-Show. This is my first time ever choreo-ing a Bollywood style dance. Ill let you know how it turns out. So yeah this semester has been busy but not in a pset-test-class kind of way. More in a let-me-absorb-as-much-of-this-place-as-I-can-before-I-leave kind of way. In three short months, Ill be graduatingcant believe it. It feels like just yesterday that I wrote those entries from freshman year In any case, hopefully more time = more exploring = more interesting stuff for me to tell you! Born in Ireland’s County Londonderry on September 25, 1740, Hercules Mulligan immigrated to the American colonies when he was just six years old. He also catered to wealthy British businessmen and high-ranking British military officers. He employed several tailors but preferred to greet his customers himself, taking the customary measurements and building rapport among his clientele. His business thrived, and he established a solid reputation with the gentleman of the upper class and with the British officers.† Thanks to his close access to British officers,  Mulligan was able to accomplish two very important things in a very short time. First, in 1773, he married Miss Elizabeth Sanders at Trinity Church in New York. This should be unremarkable, but Mulligan’s bride was the niece of Admiral Charles Saunders, who had been a commander in the Royal Navy prior to his death; this  gave Mulligan access to some high-ranking individuals. In addition to his marriage, Mulligan’s role as a tailor allowed him to be present during numerous conversations between British officers; in general, a tailor was much like a servant, and considered invisible, so his clients had no qualms about speaking freely in front of him. Mulligan was also a smooth talker. When British officers and businessmen came to his shop, he flattered them regularly with words of admiration. He soon figured out how to gauge troop movements based upon pickup times; if multiple officers said they’d be back for a repaired uniform on the same day, Mulligan could figure out the dates of upcoming activities. Often, he sent his slave, Cato, to General George Washington’s camp in New Jersey with the information. In 1777, Mulligan’s friend Hamilton was working as aide-de-camp to Washington, and was intimately involved in intelligence operations. Hamilton realized that Mulligan was ideally placed to gather information; Mulligan agreed almost immediately to help the patriotic cause.   Saving General Washington   Mulligan is credited with saving George Washingtons life not once, but on two separate occasions.  The first time was in 1779, when he uncovered a plot to capture the general. When a large amount of provisions were ordered, Hugh asked a commissary officer why they were needed; the man revealed that several hundred troops were being sent to Connecticut to intercept and seize Washington. Hugh passed the information along to his brother, who then relayed it to the Continental Army, allowing Washington to change his plans and set his own trap for British forces.   In addition to these crucial bits of information, Mulligan spent the years of the American Revolution gathering details about troop movement, supply chains, and more; all of which he passed along to Washington’s intelligence staff. He worked in tandem with the Culper Ring, a network of six spies engaged directly by Washington’s spymaster, Benjamin Tallmadge. Effectively working as a subagent of the Culper Ring, Mulligan was one of several people who passed intelligence along to Tallmadge, and thus, directly into Washington’s hands. Mulligan and his slave, Cato, were not above suspicion. At one point, Cato was captured and beaten on his way back from Washington’s camp, and Mulligan himself was arrested several times. In particular, following the defection of Benedict Arnold to the British army, Mulligan and other members of the Culper ring had to put their covert activities on hold for a while. However, the British were never able to find hard evidence that any of the men were involved in espionage. After the Revolution Following the end of the war, Mulligan occasionally found himself in trouble with his neighbors; his role of cozying up to British officers had been incredibly convincing, and many people suspected he was in fact a Tory sympathizer. To reduce the risk of his being tarred and feathered, Washington himself came to Mulligan’s shop as a customer following an Evacuation Day parade, and ordered a complete civilian wardrobe to commemorate the end of his military service. First, with the horrible and huge quantities of snow, it is almost impossible to do the two mile trek every day to get to their job, but even when they get there the horrible conditions don’t end. â€Å"There was no heat upon the killing beds; the men might exactly as well have worked out of doors all winter†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ â€Å"On the killing beds you were apt to be covered with blood, and it would freeze solid; if you leaned against a pillar, you would freeze to that, and if you put your hand upon the blade of your knife, you would run a chance of leaving your skin on it. The men would tie up their feet in newspapers and old sacks, and these would be soaked in blood and frozen, and then soaked again, and so on, until by nighttime a man would be walking on great lumps the size of the feet of an elephant. Now and then, when the bosses were not looking, you would see them plunging their feet and ankles into the steaming hot carcass of the steer, or darting across the room to the hot-water jets. The cruelest thing of all was that nearly all of them – all of those who used knives – were unable to wear gloves, and their arms would be white with frost and their hands would grow numb, and then of course there would be accidents. † (80) The men had to work in those horrible conditions day after day until winter was over, but none of them would quit, they needed the money and if they quit or demanded better conditions, there were thousands outside just waiting to take their place. Mister Sinclair shows that even though the working conditions were so dreadful, not one man would stop coming to work. They would rather risk dying in the factories, or dying from frostbite as they trekked through the snow than stop coming to work and allow someone else to take their job, because back then that was suicide. If you didn’t go to work you were allowing your family the possibility of not being able to survive the winter, because it’s just less money to fill more mouths. The horrible hardships the family faces in the winter is merely the beginning of their problems. As the book goes on things seem like they’re looking up, Ona has her baby, which they name Antanas, and the family is working hard to make money. Then Jurgis breaks his ankle and cannot return to work for months. â€Å"in leaping out of the way he turned his ankle. There was a twinge of pain, but Jurgis was used to pain, and did not coddle himself. When he came to walk home, however, he realized that it was hurting him a great deal; and in the morning his ankle was swollen out nearly double its size, and he could not get his foot into his shoe. (114) Jurgis is laid up for a couple weeks and tries to return to work, but in doing this he injures himself more and has to stay out of work for much longer and when he returns there is no job left for him. Jurgis faced many other hardships in his life, such as being put in jail, his wife dying in childbirth and his son dying as well. His story was horrific, but he was unfortunately, not alone. The horrible conditions Jurgis faced and went through were the problems of thousands of men, women and even children all over America in the early 1900s. Upton Sinclair shines a bright light on how horrible the people had it and how the upper class people didn’t even notice or care. The main issue was to generate as much product as they could for as small of a cost as possible. Then people from various countries didn’t know anything about rights and things like they, they just craved any job they could get, no matter how bad. Many of their family members also died from work, or other things like starvation, childbirth or simply like Antanas died; by downing in the rivers of water that flowed through the streets in the spring. Mr. Sinclair did an amazing job giving the people insight on how horrible the conditions really were, although people mainly focused on the disgusting conditions of the meat packing industry. On the observation of 28216, many bus stops were seen with three to four waiting passengers. Some were dressed for work whereas others were dressed casually. There are billboards promoting local schools, businesses, and public awareness. The busses also have advertisements in the form of posters on them. Some were unemployed, others were students, and then there were the workers out on their lunch break. Dress style also varied in this area. Some wore work uniforms and others were casually dressed. There were no animals seen during observations, but when speaking with some of the residents many spoke of having dogs. Other industries in the area include Manufacturing and Finance/Real Estate. There are also employees at the local stores, banks, restaurants, university, and health care facilities. The fire station and the two police departments also are places for employment even though the fire station appeared to be rather small. The most common ethnic group in 28216 is African American (60%). Only 30% of the community are white with the remaining 10% of the residents being other races such as Pacific Islander/Asian, Hispanic and ixed races. Johnson C.
